The MontBell Alpine Light Down Jacket is MontBell's new highly functional mid-layer that possesses characteristics essential for backcountry travel: aggressive warmth to weight ratio and wide ranging versatility, while maintaining exceptional compressibility. By comparing the Alpine Light layer to its fleece counterparts you find it lighter, more compact, and far warmer. The secret to the warmth of this garment is the phenomenal wind shedding ability of the 30-denier Ballistic™ nylon shell and copious amounts of 800 fill power goose down. By blocking a high amount of wind you are able to conserve the heat your body naturally produces. Cheat the icy blasts this Fall/Winter season and stay toasty warm whether you frequent the hidden slopes of your favorite backcountry spot, endure the challenges of a winter camp, or like to look the part around the trendiest mountain towns.

I purchased the men's version to have a more comfortable fit for layering, as not all women are shaped like a bell, which is a good thing! Anyway after reading many reviews and checking many sites for the best price OMC won out! And their customer service ROCKS! This jacket is one of the best I own and as a woman I own a LOT of jackets! It's very warm for it's fill weight of 4oz-800 fill, the large drop pockets inside assure I don't loose my favorite gloves. For a "no frills" jacket it ended up my favorite, the elastic cuffs are better quality than I thought, and the color is pretty nice (blue) for a guys jacket. The hand warmer pockets do work fine, even as others have wished for both sides to be lined. I love the soft fleece at the neck very soft! For me the only problem is the static on..

I bought the 2011 version of the Alpine Light to replace the one I bought a couple years ago. More than anything I just wanted the adjustable draw string at the hem that is on this year’s model and not on my old one. When I got the new jacket it felt a lot thinner than my old one. I laid it down on my floor to compare thickness the old jacket had twice as much loft as the new one. I gave it a while just to make sure it wasn't because the down had been compressed. On Montbell's website they still list 4 ounces of down fill just like they have for the past three years. Suspect that Montbell is cutting some corners now that they have a foothold in the market...

This jacket has been great thus far. It's proven to be extremely warm and durable in the time that I have used it. The arms on it are a little longer which has been great for alpine/ice climbing where you are extending your arms above your head frequently. Once again I'm very happy with the products that Montbell produces...

This is my first down jacket and it rules. Here are some reasons. Nobody has it unlike a North Face product. Has good color selections. Great quality. Now for the technical stuff. Light weight. If you were blindfolded you might not think there is a jacket on your body. Everybody I know who picks it up is amazed. You can almost toss it in the air and watch it levitate. Compresses down into no size at all. When stuffed into its stuffsack, its not much bigger than a nalagene water bottle. Warmth. I used it the other day with it about 27 degrees outside thanks to windchill and was perfectly content walking from my room to class. It is not the warmest for just walking from place to place on cold cold days, or with strong winds as there are no sinch cords on the waist to seal in warmth, but..
