I have used the heat exchanger in conjunction with an MSR Alpine cookset for roughly 20 years. Both the heat exchanger and my whisperlite stove easily nest inside of the cookset. To use the exchanger, you slip your pot inside, and spin a thumb screw to tighten the exchanger around the pot. You then slide the exchanger down so that heat from your stove hits the bottom of the pot, moves outward to where the heat exchanger channels the heat up the sides of the pot and reduces the amount of heat that is simply lost to the atmosphere.
A side benefit of sliding the heat exchanger down below the bottom of the pot is that it mostly eliminates the need to use a wind screen in fairly good conditions. Really windy conditions still require a wind screen.
